Is it OK to prune during winter?

Winter is actually a good time to prune trees as most plants go dormant, meaning that they are no longer actively growing during this period. Here are a few reasons to prune during this time of the season:

  • Dormant pruning causes less stress or shock to the trees as it gives trees time to heal from the pruning cuts allowing for better recovery and hearty new growth in the spring
  • Pruning when all the leaves have fallen away it makes it easier to see the true tree shape and the best places to prune to improve the health and safety of the trees
  • Pruning in the winter reduces susceptibility to, and the spread of, disease since parasites, insects and bacteria are also dormant making it less likely that disease is transmitted during pruning
